About Us

History

The land itself has been farmed by our family since around 1932. That is three generations of growing a wide range of vegetables to send to local and regional markets. It was in 1999 that the market gardening industry, which had had been in decline for years, hit new lows. Being a small family business we found ourselves in an impossible position and so it was clear we could not continue to operate as solely a farming business.

The Door / The Shop I

In August 1999 that we started to sell our fruit and vegetable produce direct to the public. We were using nothing more than a couple of crates and an upturned door, outside, on the side of the field. During the winter the 'shop' retreated to inside the nearest green house taking our trusty door with us.

The shop II

In early 2000 an unexpectedly warm day lead the produce for sale to literally wilt before your eyes. Obviously urgent action was needed and hastily a shop was created from what in essence was a large garden shed. Over time shelving was added, a proper floor and a thick coat of paint inside and out.

The shop III

On April 9th 2004 and after five long years the shop was again on the move; albeit only a few yards. Finally we actually had a bricks and mortar building to sell from. Still on the same piece of land and only a stones throw from where we first sold our produce. Still we continue to make improvements to the shop, produce, product range and services.

The summation

We have literally built the shop from the ground up. There have been no managers, contractors or companies come in and control the business and its not an off shoot of some big organisation. It is 100% family run business which has been in the location for generations. We believe we are what is traditionally regarded as a farm shop and we are NOT a purpose built store that just happens to be near a field.
